Blood at the Root

At Cedar High School in Louisiana, a Black student challenges an unspoken boundary by sitting beneath a tree traditionally claimed by white students. When nooses appear from its branches, escalating tensions lead to a school fight and severe charges against six Black students.

Inspired by the case known as the Jena Six, Dominique Morisseau’s ensemble drama follows students whose relationships and beliefs are tested by the aftermath. Moving among their competing perspectives, Blood at the Root examines racial double standards, fractured friendships, gender and class tensions, and what justice demands from a divided community.
